Shorting the stock would be TOO obvious. Buying shares and options after it had fallen would have put him in the company of many other individuals and it'd be less obvious.

Also, the logic is pretty hilarious.  What exactly would he know that the market didn't at that point?  I guess that the bombs would stop?

He probably wasn't authorized to short.
