Things Not to Do for 2014

In the spirit of the holidays, I think more important than returns are things I would like to see not appear on this board in the coming year.  In no particular order and by no means an exclusive list:

1.  "LOL", especially when it's just written into the middle of a sentence.

2.  Emotions written out like there is a script.  Things like "sigh" and the variation on that "*sigh*".  Also, related to this would be something like "smacks forehead" after repeating something.

3.  Contrasts made by saying "I'm looking at you [insert name of person or thing]".

4.  Abbreviations of words that one has to be have been texting since they were 10 years old to understand.

I am sure I will come up with others.

I once heard a story, how true it is I'm not sure, but this parent would consistently put "lol" at the end of the sentence of a text message.

Like, "Don't forget to pick up the milk, honey, lol"

or, "We're having dinner at 6pm, lol"

As time went on, not too many people thought much of it. Then one day a relative passed away. So the parent wrote something to the effect of "Grandma June passed away. Please keep her family in your thoughts. lol" and I think sent it as a mass text to the family. People were like "how could you laugh at that???"

It turns out that she thought LOL meant "lots of love." Gotta love old people.

:o ;)

5.  New posters who arrive on the board like a bat out of hell.  It's like all of these thoughts and comments have been bottled up just waiting to be unleashed on the board.  They will add a thought to almost any subject.  Sometimes they like to try and establish their position on the board by almost immediately taking contrary views and being argumentative.  They remind me very much of Neal Cassady.  They are "mad to live, mad to talk, mad to be saved, desirous of everything at the same time."

I think he's been here a while...

Also, 5 is probably the biggest issue with the board, but it is understandable.  I posted way too much when I first joined too.  Perhaps I still do.

Haha, guilty...But I must say this board is spectacular. I think the newbies get so excited that something like this exists after they emerge from the purgatory of yahoo message boards and motley fool and seeking alpha comments and have an urge to participate. I know I do. The debates are almost always very civil and both sides generally are trying to seek the truth, rather than just scream at each other and make ad hominem attacks. It's truly something special. Even the ever exclusive VIC comment streams can be worse than here.

So who wants to debate the value of Jim Chanos and alpha generating shortsellers? LOL *Smiles*

6.  References to Buffett and Munger as "Warren" and "Charlie".

7.  As support for a statement using a Buffett or Munger platitude and considering that to be the end of discussion.  For example, when discussing a business that is having a difficult time saying "As Warren says, 'Turnarounds rarely turn' ".

I agree somewhat

I think thepupil is right that there is quite a bit of excitement when someone first finds this board and realizes the wealth of information on it. I certainly acted the same way when I first started out.

The again, I've been here three years and only have about 500 posts. I'm moderately impressed with my self-restraint given that I'm a former windbag lawyer.

I've been a member since 2008 and only have 900 (but I don't remember when the switch to this new board was that 900 is probably only since then).  I wouldn't want to discourage people from posting though. What makes this board so valuable is all the info posted by some incredibly smart and talented people.  As Warren says "It's better to hang out with people better than you."  lol.

One thing that tends to tick me off is people who don’t understand the difference between facts and their own opinions. You may be 100% certain that something is going to happen, but that is usually just an opinion until it either happens or doesn’t, only then is it a fact.

As has been said, "Opinions are like a**holes, everybody has one."

I agree with this too -- I think having more information and opinions (within reason, I suppose) is generally going to be a net positive for this board.

I'm going to add YOLO to this list. Please, no more YOLO. (More of a general interwebs thing rather than for this board -- I don't know that I've seen it pop up here...)

I just figured out what IIRC means, had to google it.  BTW: to google means to type something into your search engine, look at it, and then promptly forget what you looked up.

I am 100% certain that Kraven has too much time on his hands today.  lol,  ;) ::), iirc

I wonder if Warren and Charlie would agree?  WTF....

FWIW, I think Uncle Warren is the best investor I have ever seen....  lol.

Making lists that include 2- and sometimes 3- but never ever include item 1-

What kind of text formatting is that? Were you raised by wolves?

+1, I know we have a lot of Canadians on here, but its really hard for my poor brain to follow:

1b, 1c, 2a, 1a, 3b.......... As Charlie says: "I feel like I'm playing battleship." Yeah I'm looking at you Trap. LOL  ;)

6a- Fabricating quotes from full interviews and papers. Summarizing an interview into a quote is not a quote!

I have one, discussing crap ideas like JCP to death and giving interesting small cap ideas barely any discussion. Is this parkinsons law at work? I looked up a bunch of these multipage threads, and they mostly didnt perform very well over the past few years. Is it because everyone has an opinion about these things?
