<groan>  I fear you'll get your wish.   Right after the Footloose reboot with a female lead.

The Footloose remake with a male lead was bad enough...they don't need a 3rd kick at the can...male or female!   ;D  Cheers!

I think we should do Tomb Raider with a white male lead. Laurence Croft, I'm sure that would go over great with the media.

I don't understand the changing the past thing. Were minorities underrepresented in the movie industry? Yeah they probably were. But how does going back and changing Ariel, or altering franchises make anything better? Why not work on making new franchises with a different focus? This whole "movement" feels like a now 40 year old man constantly talking about his glory days of high school football and how he could have went pro. Move on and do something better. The pendulum is swinging too far the other way and it's becoming tiresome. I mean look at TV shows. How many new shows are with strong female leads compared to men? The overwhelming effort is quite clear.

Empire
Scandal
Quantico
How to Get Away with Murder
New Girl
Two Broke Girls
Killing Eve
Orange is the New Black
The Good Place
The Handmaid's Tale
Pretty Little Liars (and the revamp)
Better Things
Grey's Anatomy (has drastically shifted over the years)
Once Upon a Time
Star Trek: Discovery
Homeland
Parks and Recreation
Stranger Things (arguably female lead)

The list goes on. Quick stat is 42% of new shows are women lead characters. 20% are male leads and the rest is couple lead. I'm not saying I don't/didn't enjoy any of these shows. But the push is quite obvious. As LC said, I wonder if it will ultimately lead to poor quality shows simply because they character has to be this or that. But as I've said; new stuff doesn't bother me. It's when they try to go back in time and change things or ruin good solid franchises out of political correctness.

The push is on because women under 50 with disposable income is one of the fastest growing segments of the viewing audience.  Women made the Kardashians...not good television.  Sports teams, entertainment, business, entrepreneurship...all catering to women under 50.  As Buffett said, the U.S. achieved such extraordinary success with applying only half its workforce...the other half is now awakening with more money, power and position than ever before!  Cheers!

I think that's part of it for sure. But the politics are definitely included in that equation. Really, it's capitalism at its finest. Companies utilizing customer and political emotion/movements to make a buck off people who think these same companies really care.

I agree. When I tried to come up with the worst idea for a movie that I could think of that is what I thought of first. If it turned out as bad compared with the original as the Ghostbusters remake was, then it would be truly awful.

Ironically, the most imaginative and creative stuff is happening on television.  Whether you were a fan or not, Game of Thrones, really changed what could be imagined and presented on television.

And now you've got powerhouse studios that focus on television rather than film like Netflix, Amazon, etc.  We can complain about how unimaginative Hollywood is, but the truth is that television has not been this creative since the 60's!

I was watching the Wimbledon finals this weekend, and people reminisce about the golden era of Men's tennis...two eras...70's/80's Conners, Borg, McEnroe, Lendl and the 90's/early 2000's with Agassi, Sampras, Hewitt, Roddick, etc.  But this era with Nadal, Djokavic and Federer is really the truly golden age of men's tennis...they are so much better than everyone else around them, and push each other to evolve year after year.

I think that is the short shrift Hollywood is getting right now.  They've probably never been as creative as they are since the era of John Ford, Orson Welles, etc, yet people are complaining about how generic and derivative everything is these days.  And that's mainly because all of these Marvel and DC Comic movies are being made.  But we've seen this rodeo before...remember when Westerns were all the rage.  From the 50's to the late 80's, you had at least 3-4 Westerns come out every year!  And on telelvision...remember Bonanza, Gunsmoke, The Rifleman, The Big Valley...all the way to Dallas!

So maybe things aren't as irrelevant and boring as we think...since we're looking through rose-tinted glasses!  Cheers!

No, I'm talking about the sets, the battle scenes, special effects, writing, etc.  Some of the finest battles in movie history were in Game of Thrones...comparable to Saving Private Ryan, The Longest Day, Alexander, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, etc.  Plus the porn in the first 5 seasons!  Cheers!
