"The whole "Bible belt" nonsense is a political talking point to try and place blame on a few radical individuals."

Isn't equivalent to racism or discrimination?

I mean the people accusing Trump of racism are themselves obviously intolerant with such comments. Do these people realize how many African Americans follow such teaching?

Cardboard

For the record, I think it is intolerant and damaging to the country to stereotype rural poor whites they way many inner-city liberals do.  That doesn't change what Trump did.  Obama got pushback (deservedly so to some extent as he wasn't actually insulting rural Americans if you read the context, but the word choice was kind of insulting) for talking about rural people "clinging to their guns and Bibles".  That was one bad comment and Dems, as well as Republican's, gave him pushback.  Trump's twitter feed and his speeches have been a word vomit of racist and bigoted statements, and so far most Republican's have not said a word.

I very much agree. I brought up the “Bible Belt” as an example they you can easily fire reverse the argument and replace “Baltimore” with a poor rural area in a red state and make the same argument, it leads nowhere, especially when these things are said by the president who’s job it is to be a president of all citizens and make their life better.
To be a realist, one has to believe in miracles.

It's not the governments job to make your life better so to speak. The only proper function of government is to protect individual rights. The government can "make your life better" to the point that they are protecting your individual rights. Anything beyond that is Unconstitutional, immoral, and most likely an infringement on someone else individual rights. The American dream is the right to a chance at success. Not the right to success. If government functioned properly then you could say the American dream is the ability to try and fail and know that only you can be blamed for your failures.

...and he should be treated with the respect that office deserves. Not many takers for that sentiment these days.

Hey all:

There is a HUGE difference between the problems in Baltimore, Detroit and rural poverty.

The rural poor largely had nothing..back in 1850 it was hand to mouth, hardscrabble living.  In 1900 same thing, maybe a touch better, same thing in 1920, 1940, 1940.  Generally getting a bit better, but still kind of bleak.

Contrast that to the cities.  Back in 1850, pretty grim.  By 1900, things had gotten better for almost EVERYBODY in the cities, some more than others, but still better than 1850 across the board.  By 1920, Detroit was THRIVING.  Even colored folk were doing better.  Advance to 1950 and 1960 and this was even more so.

Advance to the very late 60's and things start falling apart in the cities.  In the 1970's, it is a ROCKET SLED of disaster.

Here in Detroit, there were 10's of thousands of BRICK homes burned up and abandoned.  Whole neighborhoods DESTROYED.

The difference with cities is that there was something there.  Something that was possibly incredible.  So much infrastructure and wealth destroyed...billions & Billions & BILLIONS.  As bad as that was, what was EVEN WORSE was the destruction in human potential & capital.

The cities had something (infrastructure and potential) and threw it away.

The rural poor largely had nothing, and they kept it.
