President Trump announces deal to temporarily reopen the federal government

“They save good people from attempting a very dangerous journey from other countries - thousands of miles - because they have a glimmer of hope of coming through. With a wall, they don’t have that hope.”

IMHO the reality is that a shutdown is silly, especially over $5B for a wall. Trump knows this but needs to save face.

He looks worse the longer the shutdown goes on.

He saves more face by acquiescing in steps: 1) temporarily opening the gov't for 3 weeks, then 2) in 3 weeks if he says "ok we'll stay open for business but we're going to really negotiate this wall thing now".

Also, if the Democrats really don't want a wall - they need to give Trump a reason to blame them. To Trump it's all about perception. He needs to be perceived as trying oh so hard, but those mean mean Democrats just would not let him "MAGA". The Democrats need to provide him with something he can use as his own excuse.

So I won't even pile on with the "caving-in to Pelosi" stuff - it's not a bad thing to "cave" to a good idea.

That's such a one sided view of the situation. If it's sad that neither side will give e in over 5bil then you have to look somewhere else for a reason. 5 bil is a drop in the bucket for the budget.

Trump doesn't want to lose the wall. As you said he has to Dave face. But he feels it's important. Any btw anyone who says wall don't work is well not accurate. Walls have been effective all throughout history in every time period. The Berlin Wall had over 5k people try to cross but only 50ish we're successful.

The Democrats really don't have any reason to not agree. 5bil. Is a small enough sum of money that they really look bad by not wanting the wall. What negative impact comes from building the wall? Litterally nothing besides 5bil spent. What bad can come from not building the wall? Well it gives Republicans all kind of ammo one year down the road when they can say. "Look! If we would have had a wall we would have stopped x number of illegals blah blah blah.."

It's a foolish point to take a stance on. Because they won't come out looking good no matter what.

I don't feel bad for govt employees. Look how many lives they have ruined. Their policies, enforcement, fines, taxes, etc. Plus the free market is showing a lot if these workers aren't necessary. Look at all the volunteers getting stuff done like maintaining the parks etc.

It's asinine to compare a wall along the southern US border to the Berlin Wall.  But putting that aside, you can't seriously believe there were only 50 successful crossings of the Berlin Wall over its lifetime?

Reuters reports approximately 5,000 crossed the Berlin wall:
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-germany-wall-profile/factbox-what-was-the-berlin-wall-idUSTRE7792U020110810

Additionally, in good faith I think it would be prudent to justify the claim as to how these 800,000 gov't employees are ruining lives, how the free market has shown they are not necessary, and how volunteers can perform the same tasks.

No. It was the completely ill-informed comment about the Berlin wall mixed with the line about volunteers that led me to think it might be troll-bait.

I disagree with most of what you write on political topics but don't think you're a troll.

You seem very emotive for someone who crushes the market.
