Canada has a race problem too.
« on: June 19, 2020, 03:58:34 PM »
Most of the focus has been on the US but Canada has a race problem too. Canadian police kill blacks and indigenous at disproportionate rate based on population compared to whites. Canada didnt even have slavery and it appears the indigenous population is really taking it on the chin. Black person in US=Indigenous in Canada.

For those that live north of the border what gives? I wasn't aware racism was such a problem in Canada.

"Racism is everywhere, and Canada and Canadian police forces are no exception."

"And they suggest that Black, Indigenous and other racialized people are also at much greater risk in Canada."

"In Winnipeg, for example, Indigenous people made up about 10.6 per cent of the city’s population in that period. But more than 60 per cent of the people who died in police encounters were Indigenous. (In April, Winnipeg police officers shot and killed three Indigenous people in 10 days.)"

"In Toronto, Black people accounted for 37 per cent of victims. They make up slightly more than eight per cent of the population."

Instead of comparing the stats to the % of population compare it to the % of the crime committed by each ethnic group. There problems with the police are more of a social-economic issue.

I agree there is significant racism in Canada, and I am ashamed of it, but a significant driver of police interaction with indigenous groups is directly related to social-economic reasons.

Yes, Canada definitely has its problems :-) The first step is admitting you have a problem.

Listen to the leader of Canada (Trudeau) and the leader of the US (Trump) speak on the race issue. Given what each leader is saying which country has a better chance of making progress on this issue?

So then isn't the issue more so socio economic?

Granted, this was long enough ago to make me feel ancient, but I took a Sociology course in High School, and there were pretty intriguing stats regarding crimes committed by wage group and the distribution was, relatively speaking, much closer to representative than the 13/90 often just thrown out there.

Trudeau has a history of being a racist but hiding it better (you know, like a typical politician). Do you have any pictures of Trump in brown/blackface? What's the best evidence you have of Trump being racist?

Keep in mind, I'm not saying you don't have it or that there isn't better evidence, but I've not seen it.

I think a good title for this thread would be "misery loves company".

I'm not sure of all the causes but I think it's much more complex than just racism.  There is a long history here and many variables but I will call out the Canadian welfare state as being a primary culprit. When you have multiple generations on government assistance it has so clearly failed but we can't seem to move past it.  I think it is so deeply built into liberal ideology that they are unable to accept the reality that it is a fail.

If racism was the issue, why are there so many middle Eastern and Asian people with businesses, beautiful homes, etc.  There was no racism there?  There was a time where Canada banned Chinese people from entry and it wasn't that long ago.  I am old enough to have seen racism but these groups just rise above it.

Calling out racism is fine and hard to argue against but it's not going to address the real issues.

Ding, ding, ding. Correct. But as we see regularly, just about everywhere(including quite frequently here from a lot of folks) its far easier to just bitch and moan, while doing nothing to actually address the issues.
