The stupidity of liberals
« on: October 23, 2020, 10:07:57 PM »
Pretty solid article on the Russian revolution and how the Russian liberals abetted the revolutionary terrorism that lead to the deaths of millions:
https://www.firstthings.com/article/2020/10/suicide-of-the-liberals?fbclid=IwAR1TmnsxgeBYk4vIIVTytCOPHgR0UY-yy04o_3inD7c11lD_jGgbk1hkD8A

Its interesting because I see echos of it pretty much everywhere:

Quote
A strict intelligent had to subscribe to some ideology—whether populist, Marxist, or anarchist—that was committed to the total destruction of the existing order and its replacement by a utopia that would, at a stroke, eliminate every human ill.

Quote
Socialized to regard anything conservative as reprehensible—and still worse, as a social faux pas—they contrived ways to justify radical intolerance and violence as forced, understandable, and noble. They had to, since the fundamental emotional premise of liberalism—hostility to those ignorant, bigoted, morally depraved people on the right—almost always proved more compelling than professed intellectual commitments.

Quote
Educated society knew that one could not just abolish the police, as the anarchists demanded, and that socialism would not instantly cure all ills, but they assured themselves that progressive opinion must be right

Author also has a pretty good video discussing this:

Yeah, that isn't a biased link...the whole organization is a religious, right-wing site...the pop up, half way through the article talks about how God is the center of their belief.  Thanks for posting something so level-headed and unbiased!  Cheers!

Gary Saul Morson is a pretty level-headed dude.  Did you read the article?  I haven't yet but I doubt he's writing something stupid or poorly thought out.  The title of this thread, on the other hand, is really stupid.

He's drawing conclusions that socially-minded, intellectual atheists would destroy the United States like similarly like-minded Bolsheviks did in 1917.  These is what leads to right-wing journalists calling someone like George Soros a danger to society.  Cheers!

I just read it. Interesting article -thanks to OP for posting.

Where is Morson drawing these conclusions you mention?  In the Youtube video or in the article?  In the article he draws implicit parallels, for sure, but I read it only as a warning against the dangers of progressive group think.

IMO liberal/progressive society has embraced identity politics and cancel culture and other such fundamentally intolerant things to an alarming degree.  There's some serious group-think going on, me-think.

You said it yourself...he's drawing "implicit parallels" suggesting that the world may be headed down a path like 1917...but that is a very big leap.  If you read newspapers from the late 60's and early 70's, or watch television shows from that era, you would draw the same parallels on liberal group think in the United States.

Yet the movements and ideas presented then, lead to the same liberals participating in the greatest capitalist boom in the last 200 years...40 years of prosperity and economic dominance by the United States from 1980 to 2020.  Without liberal groupthink, we'd still be sucking in second hand smoke in public spaces, agricultural innovation would be stifled, the technology revolution stunted and the nuclear arms race ongoing!  Cheers!

Wow! So without liberal groupthink, I guess that entrepreneurs and capitalism would be dead?

I can't believe that you started businesses and can possibly think that Liberal groupthink is what makes society to advance.

All these growth and innovative companies must be the results of being told what to do by a small group of individuals who know better than we do?

Cheers!!!!

"Nuclear arms race ongoing."

I guess that Ronald Reagan was part of that Liberal groupthink?

First he accelerated it, to corner the Soviet Union into massive deficits, then he negotiated detente with them.

Must be much better to have a Presidential Liberal candidate on TV promising that Russia will pay for election interference?

if anyone still believes that Trump won in 2016 because of any kind of Russian involvement, of any sort, then they are stupid beyond repair.

I really love the hypocrisy of the conservatives. First they come up with identity politics, cancel culture, and other such fundamentally intolerable things and then they clutch their pearls and whine when liberals embrace them.

Don't forget--they enjoy starting threads like this one, but if you dare started a thread calling conservatives stupid, there would be a trail of tears.

They're the new snowflakes! Guess we should get used to much more if Donnie loses!
