Yeah, that isn't a biased link...the whole organization is a religious, right-wing site...the pop up, half way through the article talks about how God is the center of their belief.  Thanks for posting something so level-headed and unbiased!  Cheers!

Gary Saul Morson is a pretty level-headed dude.  Did you read the article?  I haven't yet but I doubt he's writing something stupid or poorly thought out.  The title of this thread, on the other hand, is really stupid.

He's drawing conclusions that socially-minded, intellectual atheists would destroy the United States like similarly like-minded Bolsheviks did in 1917.  These is what leads to right-wing journalists calling someone like George Soros a danger to society.  Cheers!

I just read it. Interesting article -thanks to OP for posting.

Where is Morson drawing these conclusions you mention?  In the Youtube video or in the article?  In the article he draws implicit parallels, for sure, but I read it only as a warning against the dangers of progressive group think.

IMO liberal/progressive society has embraced identity politics and cancel culture and other such fundamentally intolerant things to an alarming degree.  There's some serious group-think going on, me-think.
I really love the hypocrisy of the conservatives. First they come up with identity politics, cancel culture, and other such fundamentally intolerable things and then they clutch their pearls and whine when liberals embrace them.

Fascinating.  Previously on this board I've been called a loser lefty academic, and now the insinuation is that I'm a hypocritical conservative. My mistake for posting in the dumpster fire politics section.  Everything liberal is virtuous, everything conservative is evil.  Or vice versa.  Definitely one of the two.

Here are some more words from Morson --- whose writing I've always enjoyed despite not always agreeing with him:

"This March we completed another book entitled Minds Wide Shut: How the New Fundamentalisms Divide Us. It argues for respectful dialogue and diversity of opinion in politics, economics, religion, and literary studies."

How naive.

Doc, please note that I did not call you a hypocritical conservative.

What I did say or meant to say is that the line of complaint liberals/progressives are embracing identity politics and cancel culture is a common complaint of conservatives these days. By the way, I do not agree with those things and I do not think they are productive. But I find it highly hypocritical when conservatives complain about such things since they invented and unleashed them. It's like they invent a new fancy gun and shoot it at what they perceive as their enemies but then they complain and are shocked when the other side shoots back.

It's like in their mind conservatives think they are allowed to dish out whatever monstrosity they want and inflict whatever damage they want and the other side is just supposed to sit there and take it. It seems like they not only think that, they expect it - hence the shock. Well I'm sorry, but that's more bullshit and hypocrisy that I am willing to swallow.

Thanks for the reply.

There's enormous hypocrisy all throughout the political spectrum.  In fact I think it's pretty much impossible to avoid hypocrisy in one's political viewpoints.  The important thing is to be aware and try to minimize it to whatever extent possible.   Confronting one's own hypocrisy is a pretty important step toward understanding the opposing point of view.

I enjoy reading articulate conservative commentary because it challenges me to "debate myself" regarding my own liberal-leaning ideas.  I actually get more annoyed at liberal hypocrisy/bullshit than the conservative variety, in the same way that I would get more annoyed at my kids for doing something stupid than I would at the neighbour's kids for doing the same thing.

"Nuclear arms race ongoing."

I guess that Ronald Reagan was part of that Liberal groupthink?

First he accelerated it, to corner the Soviet Union into massive deficits, then he negotiated detente with them.

Must be much better to have a Presidential Liberal candidate on TV promising that Russia will pay for election interference?

if anyone still believes that Trump won in 2016 because of any kind of Russian involvement, of any sort, then they are stupid beyond repair.

Yes, with a 186% increase to the national debt over his predecessor...3rd largest in history.  I guess Gorbachev had nothing to do with it either.  Cheers!

Once again dead wrong.

1) Predecessor was a huge failure with runaway inflation, Iran hostage crisis failure. I mean who can say that Jimmy Carter was a success?

2) Inflation was tackled by Volcker, under Reagan, who let him raise interest rates to 20% to choke inflation and decades of prosperity followed.

3) The Soviet essentially capitulated and picked a reformer since they saw that they could not afford the arms race and feed their people. Reagan seized the opportunity and accepted to negotiate with a more reasonable man.

I seriously think you need to start watching unbiased documentaries and to read history books.

Volker was appointed by Carter in 1979 not Reagan.

No mention of Oil Crash which was the main reason.

I seriously think you need to start watching unbiased documentaries and to read history books.

Haha!  I think that may be the best comeback I've read in the history of COBF!  Cheers!
